Ireland Withdraws from Eurovision 2027 Due to Israel’s Involvement

by admin477351

Ireland has confirmed it will not participate in or broadcast the 2027 Eurovision Song Contest, citing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza as the primary reason for its decision. The announcement was made by Ireland’s national broadcaster, RTÉ, which emphasized its inability to justify involvement in the event amidst ongoing conflict and civilian casualties in the region.

The European Broadcasting Union (EBU), responsible for organizing the Eurovision Song Contest, acknowledged Ireland’s decision and expressed hope for the country’s future return to the competition. Ireland had already declined to participate in the 2026 Eurovision, aligning with nations such as the Netherlands, Spain, Iceland, and Slovenia in response to the EBU’s inclusion of Israel.

The Netherlands has also indicated its intent to sit out the 2027 contest, though discussions are underway to explore whether another broadcaster might represent the nation. Spain, Iceland, and Slovenia have yet to make their decisions public regarding their participation in the upcoming event, which is scheduled to be held in Burgas, Bulgaria, in May 2027.

RTÉ’s decision underscores concerns about the lack of independent access for international journalists to Gaza, amidst escalating tensions and humanitarian issues. While the broadcaster maintains its stance, it remains in communication with the EBU, leaving room for potential future participation if circumstances change.
