In a bid to address the growing presence of AI-generated music, Spotify is set to introduce new measures aimed at helping users differentiate between real and artificial artists. Starting September, artist profiles and track listings on the platform will feature an “AI persona” label for those identities created through artificial intelligence. This initiative seeks to protect genuine musicians from being overshadowed by AI-generated content.
Alongside the introduction of the AI persona label, Spotify will also exclude these AI-created artists from its personalized recommendation systems by default. This move underscores the company’s commitment to maintaining a clear distinction between human performers and AI identities, allowing listeners to make informed choices about the music they engage with.
Spotify will enable artists to voluntarily disclose if their identities are AI-generated. However, the platform will also rely on a combination of human reviewers and AI-powered tools to identify any undisclosed AI personas. This dual approach aims to ensure transparency and uphold the integrity of the platform as the prevalence of generative AI in music production continues to rise.
Highlighting the challenge posed by artificial and low-quality content, Spotify previously announced the removal of 75 million spam tracks over a 12-month period. This action reflects the scale of the issue and the need for platforms to adopt robust measures to manage the influx of AI-generated music.
With the increasing use of generative AI in the music industry, Spotify recognizes the importance of transparency in maintaining user trust. As listeners become more curious about the origins of the music they enjoy, distinguishing between human and AI-generated artists becomes crucial. These new measures represent Spotify’s proactive approach to navigating the evolving landscape of music streaming.
