Volkswagen is set to transform its Osnabrück plant in Germany into a hub for defense production once vehicle manufacturing concludes in 2027. The initial project planned for the site involves collaboration with Israeli defense company Rafael. The German automaker has agreed to sell the facility to Aurelius Capital, a Tel Aviv-based investment firm, in cooperation with the state of Lower Saxony, a significant Volkswagen shareholder. This agreement could see the plant producing systems and components for air defense systems aimed at Germany and other European nations.
The transition is expected to retain at least 1,200 jobs at the site, promising a new industrial future for the plant and potential for further defense-related projects. This shift comes after Volkswagen’s decision in 2024 to cease vehicle production at Osnabrück, driven by weak demand, high production costs, and stiff competition from Chinese automakers. As part of its broader restructuring, Volkswagen plans to cut approximately 100,000 jobs across its operations in the coming years.
Aurelius Capital highlighted the advantages of the Osnabrück facility, noting its experienced workforce, advanced manufacturing capabilities, and well-established infrastructure, which would be challenging to replicate from scratch. The investment firm has a diverse portfolio, including interests in cybersecurity, drone technology, and satellite systems, indicating a strategic fit for the defense production pivot.
This conversion could serve as a blueprint for other Volkswagen facilities facing uncertain futures. The idea of repurposing underutilized automotive plants for defense production is gaining traction across Europe, with various industrial companies considering similar initiatives.
