He voiced strong opposition to the government’s E1 settlement plan in the West Bank, labeling it a strategic error that could harm Israel’s standing on the global stage. The E1 initiative seeks to expand settlements between Jerusalem and Ma’ale Adumim, potentially complicating territorial continuity between major Palestinian areas.
In light of recent government actions, including the opening of tenders for over 1,000 housing units in the E1 area, Eisenkot’s remarks underscore the contentious nature of the plan. Criticism also extended to the policies of Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, whom Eisenkot accused of exacerbating settler violence in the West Bank.
