A recent meeting in Ljubljana served as a platform for discussing various issues related to chemical safety, national legislation, and international cooperation. This two-day event gathered 18 representatives from Eastern European Member States of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) to exchange insights on the implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention. The convention aims to eliminate chemical weapons and prevent their future use by prohibiting their development, production, stockpiling, and use, with 193 states having ratified it.

The agenda included country presentations and an overview of the OPCW’s activities, with discussions focusing on the impact of artificial intelligence and the role of academia in maintaining chemical safety. The meeting also addressed preventing the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. Slovenia, which actively cooperates with the OPCW, highlighted its commitment to the Chemical Weapons Convention through its national implementation and participation in international inspections. The Slovenian Chemicals Office plays a crucial role in supervising strategic chemical activities and ensuring the country’s adherence to international standards.

On May 12, Slovenia joined the OPCW Executive Council, a governing body that oversees compliance with the Chemical Weapons Convention. During its two-year tenure, Slovenia plans to focus on preventing the spread of chemical weapons and fostering international trust and security. In his opening remarks at the regional meeting, Boštjan Peršin from the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs underscored Slovenia’s dedication to advancing new technologies and promoting the peaceful and safe application of chemistry.

Through its active participation and co-organization of the regional meeting, Slovenia has demonstrated its commitment to upholding high standards of chemical safety and transparency. By prioritizing the responsible use of chemicals for peaceful purposes, Slovenia aims to strengthen its role within the OPCW and contribute to the global effort against chemical weapons proliferation. The regional meeting not only facilitated dialogue among member states but also reinforced Slovenia’s position as a leader in chemical safety and international cooperation.
