Slovak Interior Minister Matúš Šutaj Eštok has accused the European Union of exhibiting double standards in its evaluation of Hungary’s adherence to the rule of law. During an appearance on Slovak television, Eštok pointed out that the EU has largely remained silent about recent political actions under Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar, despite having taken a firmer stance on similar issues in the past.
Eštok specifically criticized several changes occurring in Hungary, such as the ousting of the country’s president, amendments to the constitution, restrictions on parliament members, and reforms in the public broadcasting sector. He argued that had these measures been introduced by former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, the EU’s reaction would have been more critical, potentially including sanctions.
Furthermore, Eštok questioned the European Commission’s level of scrutiny regarding recent happenings in Hungary, suggesting it has not been as rigorous as expected. This sentiment was echoed by Slovak Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár, who also voiced his concerns. Blanár argued that the constitutional changes affecting the presidency in Hungary appear to conflict with principles of the rule of law.
