In Tivat, Montenegro, European Union leaders convened with representatives from six Western Balkan nations to advance discussions on regional integration and EU enlargement. This summit included key figures from Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Albania, North Macedonia, Kosovo, and Serbia, all focusing on fostering shared prosperity, stability, and enhanced cooperation with the EU.
The talks primarily addressed economic reforms, security cooperation, and defense coordination, with a particular emphasis on bolstering resilience against cyber threats. EU officials reiterated that enlargement remains a strategic priority and urged candidate countries to persist with necessary reforms for membership. The summit also assessed the progress of the EU’s growth plan for the Western Balkans, designed to enhance economic development and strengthen the region’s ties with the European bloc.
Among the Western Balkan countries, Montenegro and Albania are regarded as the most advanced candidates for future EU membership, while others continue to grapple with political and institutional hurdles on their accession journeys. European leaders are expected to deliberate on additional financial support and initiatives aimed at accelerating the accession process for countries meeting the criteria.
Despite ongoing regional tensions, particularly between Serbia and Montenegro following recent security disputes, officials emphasized the importance of dialogue and cooperation to move the region closer to European integration. The summit underscored that while challenges exist, the path towards EU membership remains open for committed nations willing to undertake the necessary reforms.
